Perfecting the Art of the GRE Essay

Essays comprise a significant portion of many standardized tests, including the GRE and the TOEFL iBT exam. As part of your GRE or TOEFL prep, it’s important to focus on writing effective essays that will clearly communicate your thoughts to demonstrate comprehension and critical thinking. Improving your performance on GRE essay questions can significantly boost your overall score, increasing your standing with any university admissions department.

Write Several Practice Essays

Regardless of any other study methods you use, there is no substitute for practicing your essay-writing skills. This method will teach you how to draft and complete an essay in the amount of time you’ll be given, which will not only reduce stress during the GRE, but also help you feel more confident in your ability to write a clear and concise essay on your final test. Once you’ve completed your practice essays, consider asking a tutor, teacher, or friend to read them and offer constructive advice you can incorporate for even greater success.

Maintain a Clear Position

When constructing a clear and solid essay, it’s important to stick to your thesis assertion. Take the time to list out each point you want to make, then refer back to your thesis to ensure you are maintaining the same stance on your chosen topic throughout the essay. Changing your position midway through the essay will reduce your score by causing your argument to feel weak or poorly conceived. Keep in mind that your essay is not necessarily a permanent statement on your personal views—it is simply a tool used to evaluate your ability to argue a given point in a structured and understandable way.
